Even with Hitchcock to distract us with angry birds, it was hard to ignore the tension that was lingering between us. I made no attempts to breach the chasm. There were a few smiles brought on by visual distractions. As soon as she realized who she was next to, it would just erase. Remembering the reality of it was worse than seeing a school teacher getting her eyes gouged out by birds, apparently.

The car ride home was quiet. I asked her if she wanted to talk about it and she just gave me that stone cold look. You know, that murder hawk stare that just screams open your mouth and you’ll die? Yeah, that sort of look. So I kept my mouth shut and my mind focused on if she would ever talk to me again after tonight. When I got to her house, I pulled up next to the curb. She opened the door before the car even stopped.

“We’ll talk tomorrow.” She said, shutting the door, leaving me in silence as I watched her walk up to the house.

If she meant that, I couldn’t tell. Driving home, I felt like a zombie. Walking into my house and going upstairs to my room was all a blur. As I jumped onto my bed, lying down to stare at my ceiling fan spinning around and around, I waited for the night to be over. Closing my eyes, I could not get the image of Ashley’s face out of my head. She was selfish... but so was I. A selfish, lying asshole.

Taking out my phone, I pushed it on to the onslaught of half a million texts and missed call notifications. Scrolling through the typed words Ashley had sent sunk me deeper into a hole of misery.

I know you’re with your girl, but I have to tell you something.
